We’ve been closely monitoring the market and have noticed that prices for pulpwood have been steadily increasing since September 2017. Find out why we don’t want our customers to worry about it in our latest newsletter (and sign up to receive our next one!)

Nova Tissue reacts to pulp price increase by continuing to offer customers the same reliable service

Due to an unusually warm winter globally, it is a difficult time to harvest pulpwood and demand for pulp is high. This means that rather than prices fluctuating each month as they usually do, they have been steadily increasing since September 2017 and are predicted to continue doing so into the middle of 2018. In addition to this, there has been a distinct shortage of paper reels in the market, which means that every manufacturer is on strict allocation. With paper making up 75% of the cost of our products, this is a big issue – but not one that our customers need to be concerned about.

Graph showing the pulp price increase

These unprecedented changes are affecting the whole market equally and every paper converter will be experiencing the same issues when purchasing pulp for the manufacturing process. While many larger manufacturers have chosen to increase their prices in one surge by 7-10%, at Nova Tissue we’ve been able to adapt our prices step-by-step by 2-4% at a time to ensure that our customers always receive the best price for their order, despite the fact that paper makes up 75% of the cost of our products.

We want to reassure customers that we remain ready to provide the same level of service and we will not compromise our quality or cut corners by tweaking our product specifications (eg roll height, meterage, paper grammage etc).

We will continue to watch the market place with a close eye so if and when pulp prices decrease, we will be able to reflect this with our own prices. We ask that during this period, customers place their orders as early as possible so that we can continue to be reliable with deliveries and remind customers that full truck orders have a typical lead time of 4-5 working days.

How using our Private Label service can boost your product sales

At Nova Tissue we understand that not all of our customers have the same requirements. Whether it’s the size of the order, the packaging or the product itself, we make sure that we can work flexibly around the customer’s needs.

We’ve noticed that more and more customers are using our Private Label service and designing their own branded products with the help of our trusted designers. From janitorial supplies companies and wholesalers to nursing homes, the need for own brand products is on the rise. We understand that designing packaging for toilet roll or kitchen towel might not be everyone’s forte, so our designers will guide you through the process to ensure you have a product that is ready to ‘roll’ off the shelves. We’ve built up our portfolio and know from experience that private labels help to differentiate your product from your competitor’s, which in turn creates exclusivity for your brand and fetches higher profit margins.

Adding your own logo and incorporating your strapline onto the packaging might not seem ground-breaking at first, but it could mean the difference between converting customers with a new product with the potential to grow a loyal customer base. If you’re interested in creating your own brand packaging for toilet roll or kitchen towel, contact us and we’ll use our years of experience and passion for paper products to deliver a bespoke private label product tailored to your customers’ needs.

Martyn on Maintenance

Employee Spotlight with Martyn Preston, Head Engineer at Nova Tissue

Here at Nova Tissue, we take pride in the calibre of our team members and appreciate the hard work they put in to ensure that we can continue manufacturing high quality toilet tissue and kitchen towel to a high standard day-in-day-out. Martyn Preston, our Head Engineer, took a few minutes out of his day to answer some questions about his role which sees him constantly improving the reliability, efficiency and safety of our plant and personnel:

How did you get into the paper conversion industry?

I have over 25 years’ experience in this niche industry and previously worked for an engineering company as a consultant to tissue converters so my knowledge has grown from there. A lot of what I learnt at that company is still being used here at Nova Tissue and is being passed down to younger members of the team.

Which piece of machinery at the Nova Tissue factory is your favourite and for what reason?

My favourite piece is the Stax Wrappers machine because it’s a relatively new addition to the factory. I love dealing with new pieces of kit and learning how it all works. I suppose I’m a bit like a child with a new toy, although the novelty hasn’t worn off just yet!

What sort of jobs do you do on an average day at work?

On an average day at work I go around each machine and change over parts to ensure that they are all working to achieve maximum efficiency. I also do a lot of preventative maintenance. Everything needs to be in tip-top condition because we run 24 hours a day Monday to Friday so it’s incredibly important that all the machines and equipment are spick and span – like a well-oiled machine some might say!

What do you think is Nova Tissue’s greatest ‘unique selling point’?

Because we’re a smaller family firm, we take real pride in what we do. Some people may think that making toilet paper and kitchen roll isn’t the most glamourous job in the world but it’s a lot more interesting that you might imagine and it is the people behind the manufacturing that make the products and the customer experience so good.
