Tree Aid has put up a page about our partnership, and we’re pleased to see it. You can read it here: Tree Aid’s feature on Nova Tissue.

We’ve supported the charity since 2019, so we thought we’d explain a bit about why.

What Tree Aid does

Tree Aid has worked with communities across Africa since 1987. Planting trees is part of it, but the bigger aim is helping people make a living from trees and the land around them, so families can cope better as farming gets harder in a changing climate. The charity starts with what local people know and need, which is a big reason the results last.

Why we got involved

We’ve been making tissue in the UK for over 30 years, and we wanted the business to do some good beyond selling toilet roll. So we donate a portion of our sales to Tree Aid, which goes towards its work in the Sahel.

Our Soft on Nature range is part of how we do that.

What it looks like on the ground

Communities Tree Aid works with turn tree products like shea butter and soap into small businesses. The income pays for things like healthcare and school. Farming families also get trees that give fruit, nuts and leaves, so there’s still food if other crops fail.

A recent Tree Aid project in Niger gives a good idea of the difference this can make. Women in 11 communities set up businesses around tree products, and average household income went from $100 to $451.

The share of households struggling with moderate to severe food insecurity dropped from 78% to 44%. It’s the kind of change our donations help make possible.

The rest of what we do

Tree Aid is only one part of how we try to run a responsible business. We work with suppliers who share our approach, use machinery that cuts down on energy and waste, and pack our products in compostable potato starch packaging.

There’s more on our Tree Aid partnership page.

Tree Aid has said they’re grateful for our ongoing support, and we feel the same about working with them. We’ll share more as the partnership goes on.
